Specialty Services
At The Rock Counseling Group, we have the most highly skilled therapists in the area. This allows us to provide intensive services targeted toward your specific concerns. We want to address and treat your unique life struggles in the most effective way, and we strive to provide targeted, skilled interventions in order to obtain improvements in your day-to-day functioning. We provide specialty services in multiple areas:
EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Repreocessing)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment that is designed to alleviate the distress associated with traumatic memories. During EMDR therapy, the client attends to emotionally disturbing material in brief sequential doses while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus. Therapist directed lateral eye movements are the most commonly used external stimulus but a variety of other stimuli including hand-tapping and audio stimulation are often used. According to the EMDR Institute, more than 30 controlled outcome studies on EMDR therapy have shown that it has positive effects. In some of these studies, as many as 90% of trauma survivors appeared to have no PTSD symptoms after just 3 sessions. When you begin to notice that traumatic memories are impacting your daily life and functioning, it might be time to consider EMDR. The Rock Counseling Group provides skilled, certified EMDR therapists who can walk with you as you strive to improve your day-to-day life.
University and College Students
This might be your first time living away from home. It might be a rigorous course or semester, or maybe even balancing expectations, performance worries, or trying to find an internship, job, or maintain social connections. Perhaps it is coping post-pandemic. Whatever the circumstances, college life presents its own unique challenges. If you are also experiencing depression, anxiety, social anxiety, or have had traumatic experiences, coping and daily functioning can be exceedingly difficult. Reaching out for help is the first step toward improving your life. We have years of experience with students from Parkland, the University of Illinois, Eastern Illinois University, and beyond.
Your trained therapist at The Rock Counseling Group is here for you and will work with you on a comprehensive treatment plan focused on your individualized needs. You and your therapist will focus on creating work/school/life balance, healthy living, and wellness. You will address any academic needs or concerns, social worries, and any underlying issues such as anxiety, depression, or trauma using methods such as:
- Reality Therapy
- Systemic Family Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy
- Motivational Enhancement Therapy
Eating Disorders and Body Image Concerns
When you begin to notice that disordered eating habits are affecting your life, your happiness, and your ability to concentrate, it is important that you talk to somebody about what you are going through. Your therapist will ensure that your nutritional and medical needs are carefully considered alongside your mental health treatment. Often, a team approach is best, and our highly skilled eating disorder therapists work collaboratively with many local and regional eating disorder physicians, nutritionists, and residential centers.
Your therapist will work with you to ensure the most effective and long-lasting treatment for you. You and your therapist will work together to identify and set goals incorporating a wide variety of targeted treatment modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Remediation Therapy, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Treatments will be individualized and focused on your needs and strengths and can include work on co-occurring issues or concerns such as body image issues, anxiety, or depression.
Pornography and Sexual Addictions
If you find that pornography and/or sex addiction is destroying your life and your family, it is easy to hide, causing many to continue walking in darkness with it. Of course, this only exacerbates the problem and allows it to become more frequent, and causes you to cross boundaries that normally would not be crossed. Too many people take action after serious consequences have taken place—that does not have to be you.
You and your therapist will focus on understanding the addiction cycle, identifying triggers that precede your engagement in addictive behaviors, and identifying and implementing healthier coping skills. Much work will be done with repairing broken relationships and making amends. Sessions can also include work on co-occurring concerns with communication, anxiety, or depression, for example. Treatments will be individualized, and your goals evaluated regularly to ensure optimal success and recovery.
Risk Assessment for Suicide, Self-Harm, or Threats Toward Others
Although there is much information to gather when it comes to the risk of someone harming themselves or others, our staff takes no shortcuts when it comes to suicide and risk assessment. Backed by decades of experience with risk assessments and crisis work, our staff can assist your practice or agency in conducting risk assessments and training you, your staff, or employees on how to conduct an in-depth, detailed risk assessment.
Risk assessment requires directness, intentional questioning, and careful listening, as well as the essential skills and conditions of counseling (empathy, reflection, restatements, attending, and active listening). Accurate and defensible risk assessment requires a clinician to integrate clinical judgment with the latest evidence-based practices. Our staff is trained to provide the highest quality clinically sound services in this area. Knowing when a suicide assessment is necessary is essential. Every community needs access to the best available care in the least restrictive setting. We can assist you in maintaining the best—and the safest-- care for your clients.
